Overview

An introduction to Armenia

Armenia tours reveal one of the Caucasus region's most rewarding and least-visited destinations — a small, landlocked nation where medieval monasteries rise from volcanic gorges, UNESCO World Heritage sites outnumber tourist crowds, and the capital Yerevan buzzes with café culture and Soviet-era grandeur. As the world's oldest Christian country, Armenia carries its extraordinary heritage lightly, woven into the everyday landscape from Khor Virap on the Ararat plain to the cliff-carved sanctuaries of Geghard.

Our small group Armenia tours explore this heritage with depth and pace — visiting Yerevan, Khor Virap, Geghard, Garni, Lake Sevan, Haghpat, Echmiadzin, Gyumri and Dilijan across itineraries ranging from 10 to 16 days. Armenia also combines naturally with Georgia and Azerbaijan on our wider Caucasus journeys, offering one of our most distinctive regional experiences.

Why visit

What makes Armenia worth the journey

Armenia landscape
A place apart

The oldest Christian nation on earth

Armenia adopted Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD — more than a decade before Rome. The monasteries, churches and khachkars (stone cross reliefs) that resulted from this are among the finest examples of sacred architecture found anywhere in the world.

01

Uncrowded, genuinely undiscovered

Unlike much of Europe and the wider Mediterranean, Armenia's extraordinary heritage sites remain relatively free from mass tourism. Our Armenia tour packages allow you to experience places like Geghard and Khor Virap with the space and quiet they deserve.

Landscape as dramatic as the history

From the volcanic plateau above Yerevan to the forested gorges of Dilijan and the high, luminous expanse of Lake Sevan, Armenia's scenery is as compelling as its monasteries — and often just as empty.

A natural gateway to the wider Caucasus

Armenia's position between Georgia and Azerbaijan makes it an ideal starting or finishing point for a broader Caucasus journey. Our Armenia travel packages combine seamlessly with our Georgia and Azerbaijan tours for an exceptional regional trip.

Highlights

The moments that make Armenia unforgettable

Khor Virap Monastery

Standing on the Ararat plain with Mount Ararat as its backdrop, Khor Virap is among the most dramatically sited monasteries in the world, and the spiritual birthplace of Armenian Christianity.

Geghard Monastery (UNESCO)

Partly carved directly into the cliff face of a narrow gorge, Geghard is one of Armenia's most extraordinary architectural achievements — a UNESCO World Heritage site dating in part to the 4th century.

Yerevan

Armenia's capital is a lively, walkable city of rose-tinted stone boulevards, open-air cafés and striking Soviet-era architecture, anchored by Republic Square and the remarkable Matenadaran manuscript repository.

Lake Sevan

One of the world's largest high-altitude lakes, Lake Sevan dominates the eastern Armenian landscape — its shores dotted with ancient churches and its waters reflecting the surrounding mountains in vivid blue.

Haghpat Monastery (UNESCO)

A UNESCO-listed complex founded in 976 AD, Haghpat stands above the deep Debed Canyon and represents the finest tradition of medieval Armenian ecclesiastical architecture.

Echmiadzin

The spiritual heart of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Echmiadzin has been the centre of Armenian Christianity since the 4th century and houses relics including a fragment of the True Cross.

Garni Temple

The only surviving Hellenistic temple in the Caucasus, Garni sits on a clifftop above a dramatic basalt gorge — a reminder that Armenia's layered history long predates the Christian era.

Gyumri

Armenia's second city is a proud cultural and artistic hub, its streets of 19th-century stone architecture largely intact and its ceramics and crafts traditions very much alive.

In Armenia, every stone tells a story — the challenge is deciding where to begin.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Armenia has a continental climate with four distinct seasons. Spring (April–May) brings mild temperatures and green landscapes after the winter thaw — ideal walking and sightseeing conditions. Summer (June–August) is warm to hot, particularly in Yerevan and the lower valleys. Autumn (September–October) is considered the finest season, with cool, clear days, golden hillsides and excellent visibility across the Ararat plain. Winter brings heavy snowfall to the mountains and cold temperatures throughout.

Our Armenia holidays with Georgia and Azerbaijan depart in April, May, June, August, September and October, timed to take advantage of the best spring and autumn conditions.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.
