Overview

An introduction to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, and the country never lets you forget it. Baku's medieval walled old city stands within sight of Caspian-facing skyscrapers; a hillside at Yanardag has burned with natural gas for centuries; and the rock engravings at Gobustan date back 40,000 years. Persian, Turkic, Russian and Soviet threads are woven through the culture, making Azerbaijan trips feel less like visiting a single country and more like stepping across a series of layered frontiers.

Our small group Azerbaijan tours explore this contrast at an unhurried pace, with a maximum of twelve travellers and an experienced English-speaking guide throughout. The dedicated Azerbaijan – Land of Fire itinerary covers Baku, the Absheron Peninsula, Gobustan and Sheki in eight days, while our 15-day Caucasus Discovery adds Georgia and Armenia for a complete South Caucasus journey. Both Azerbaijan tour packages run on guaranteed departures, and private tailor-made options are available year-round.

What makes Azerbaijan worth the journey

Azerbaijan Skyscrapers
A place apart

A country of genuine contrasts

Nowhere else in Europe or Asia do futurist skyscrapers, medieval city walls, fire-worshippers' temples and prehistoric rock carvings share the same postcode. Azerbaijan travel packages reveal a country that consistently surprises, whatever your frame of reference.

01

History that predates the guidebook

Gobustan's 40,000-year-old engravings, Zoroastrian fire temples and the Silk Road caravanserais of Sheki make Azerbaijan one of the most historically layered small countries in the world — and most of it still sits well off the tourist trail.

02

A natural gateway to the wider Caucasus

Azerbaijan's position makes it the logical starting point for exploring Georgia and Armenia. Our Caucasus Discovery tour links all three countries in a single journey, making it one of the most rewarding regional azerbaijan trips available for travellers with two weeks.

03

Small groups, genuine access

With a maximum of twelve people per departure, our Azerbaijan tours keep the experience personal. English-speaking guides who know the country deeply are the difference between seeing the surface and understanding what you're looking at.

Highlights

The moments that make Azerbaijan unforgettable

Baku's Medieval Old City

Icheri Sheher, Baku's UNESCO-listed walled old city, is a labyrinth of narrow lanes, ancient mosques, the Shirvanshahs' Palace and a 15th-century caravanserai — all set against the backdrop of one of the most architecturally daring modern capitals in the region.

Yanardag: The Flaming Mountain

On the Absheron Peninsula, a hillside has burned continuously with naturally escaping gas for centuries. Yanardag is one of Azerbaijan's most arresting sights and the reason the country has been known as the Land of Fire since antiquity.

Ateshgah Fire Temple

The ancient temple complex at Ateshgah on the Absheron Peninsula was a place of pilgrimage for Zoroastrian, Sikh and Hindu travellers for hundreds of years, its eternal flames fed by the same underground gas seams that defined Azerbaijani identity long before the oil age.

Gobustan Rock Engravings

Gobustan's prehistoric carvings depict human figures, animals and boats dating back as far as 40,000 years, earning UNESCO recognition as one of the world's most significant collections of rock art. The surrounding landscape of bubbling mud volcanoes adds an otherworldly dimension to the visit.

Sheki and the Khan's Palace

Set in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus, Sheki is one of Azerbaijan's most rewarding towns — a UNESCO-listed historic centre of centuries-old caravanserais and the gloriously decorated Khan's Palace, its walls covered in intricate shebeke stained-glass latticework.

The Caspian Sea

A boat trip on the Caspian, the world's largest body of inland water, gives a different perspective on Baku and the Absheron Peninsula. The shoreline's industrial heritage and Soviet-era oil derricks tell a story of the resource that shaped modern Azerbaijan.

The South Caucasus in One Journey

Azerbaijan pairs naturally with its neighbours, and our 15-day Caucasus Discovery azerbaijan tour package extends the journey into Georgia and Armenia — covering Tbilisi, Svaneti, Kakheti and Yerevan in a single, well-paced circuit through the most historically layered corner of Europe.

Azerbaijan rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Azerbaijan has a broadly continental climate, though the country's varied geography — Caspian coastline, semi-arid Gobustan plateau and the forested foothills of the Greater Caucasus — means conditions vary significantly by region. Spring (April to June) brings warm, dry days ideal for exploring Baku's old city and the Absheron Peninsula before the summer heat sets in. Autumn (September to November) is the most popular season: temperatures are comfortable across the country, the light is exceptional, and the Sheki foothills take on a golden hue.

Our Azerbaijan tour packages depart in May and September, placing travellers in the country during the two most rewarding windows of the year. The 15-day Caucasus Discovery also runs in April, August and October, giving additional flexibility for those combining Azerbaijan with Georgia and Armenia.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

Azerbaijani tour with Naxcivan extension. The highlights just kept on coming — not a dull day in the itinerary. The extension to Naxcivan was worth doing and provided the best experience of all: a hike up to Alinja Castle, 1700 steps, to see a "mini Machu Picchu." Hotels were good and the food provided was excellent.

We had a wonderful holiday in Azerbaijan and Georgia — flawlessly organised. Travelling as a family of four we were able to see so many wonderful sights in both countries. Both countries were delightful in every way!

Stunning scenery, friendly people, and history galore. Everything promised was delivered and worked without issue — the local guides were absolutely amazing.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Didn’t find your perfect Azerbaijan trip?

We’ll build one around you.

Azerbaijan's variety lends itself especially well to a tailor-made approach. A private itinerary can linger in the lanes of Icheri Sheher, take an extra day among the caravanserais and Khan's Palace in Sheki, or push into the Nakhchivan exclave — an autonomous Azeri enclave of remarkable monuments and landscapes that rarely features on a standard group tour.

Undiscovered Destinations arranges private transport, local guides and a range of accommodation options throughout. If you have a specific window or a combination of countries in mind, speak to the team and we'll design the Azerbaijan travel package around you.
