Overview

An introduction to Benin

Benin tours reveal a West Africa that few travellers have seen — a small, quietly extraordinary nation where ancient traditions are still lived, not merely preserved. This is the birthplace of voodoo, the heartland of the former Dahomey Kingdom, and a country where the stilt village of Ganvié floats on Lake Nokoué, the Door of No Return stands in Ouidah, and the royal palaces of Abomey carry the weight of a powerful and complex history.

Our small group Benin tours focus on the experiences that make this destination unlike anywhere else in Africa — voodoo ceremonies in Ouidah, royal heritage in Porto-Novo and Abomey, life on the water at Ganvié, and the remarkable Tata Somba fortress houses of the north. Benin travel packages from Undiscovered Destinations run from 11 to 25 days, combining Benin with neighbouring Togo and Ghana for a fuller picture of West Africa's cultural riches.

The Birthplace of Voodoo

Benin is where voodoo originated, and it remains a living, practised faith — not a tourist spectacle. The annual Voodoo Festival in Ouidah draws worshippers from across West Africa and the diaspora, and ceremonies are visible throughout the year.

01

A History Unlike Any Other

From the Dahomey Kingdom's royal palaces in Abomey to the Slave Route in Ouidah and the colonial legacy of Porto-Novo, Benin holds one of the most layered and significant histories in sub-Saharan Africa.

02

Genuinely Off the Beaten Track

Benin receives a fraction of the visitors that arrive in more familiar African destinations. That means no crowds at UNESCO sites, genuine encounters with local communities, and a country that still feels discovered rather than packaged.

An Extraordinary Diversity in a Small Nation
03

An Extraordinary Diversity in a Small Nation

From floating villages on Lake Nokoué to fortress houses in the north, from bustling coastal markets to voodoo shrines in the forest, Benin packs remarkable variety into a compact country — making it ideal for small group touring with limited travel time.

Highlights

The moments that make Benin unforgettable

Voodoo Ceremonies in Ouidah

Ouidah is the spiritual capital of voodoo and one of the most atmospheric places in West Africa. Witness ceremonies, shrines, and traditions that have remained unbroken for centuries — an experience unlike anything found elsewhere on the continent.

The Door of No Return

Stand at the haunting point on the Ouidah coast from which enslaved Africans were shipped to the New World. The Slave Route and its monuments tell a story of immense historical importance with quiet, unforgettable power.

Ganvié Stilt Village

Take a boat across Lake Nokoué to Ganvié, a remarkable community of thousands built entirely on stilts above the water. Daily life here — fishing, trading, travelling — plays out entirely by pirogue.

Royal Palaces of Abomey

The UNESCO-listed palaces of Abomey were the seat of the Dahomey Kingdom, one of the most powerful states in West Africa's history. Bas-reliefs, royal regalia, and guided storytelling bring this extraordinary legacy to life.

Porto-Novo Royal Heritage

Benin's capital is a city of colonial architecture, sacred voodoo temples, and the ceremonial heritage of the Porto-Novo royal family — a quieter and deeply rewarding contrast to Cotonou's energy.

Tata Somba Houses of the North

In the far north of Benin, the Somba people live in fortress-like clay towers that have barely changed in hundreds of years. These extraordinary dwellings are as much a social statement as an architectural one.

Parakou Cultural Encounters

The largest city in northern Benin, Parakou is a gateway to the country's Muslim north and a place to engage with communities, cultural dances, and a way of life quite distinct from the coastal south.

Cotonou & Dantokpa Market

Cotonou is Benin's commercial capital and home to Dantokpa, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa — a vivid, chaotic, and endlessly fascinating place to experience everyday Beninese life.

Benin rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Our Benin tours depart in October, December, January, February and April — all viable times to travel, each with its own character. October and April sit at the edge of the rainy season, when the landscape is green and humidity is manageable. December and January are the driest and most comfortable months for travel, with cooler evenings and clear skies — January departures also coincide with the Ouidah Voodoo Festival. February offers warm, dry conditions ideal for cultural touring. If you'd prefer different dates for your Benin trip, we can arrange a tailor-made itinerary to suit your schedule.

Benin

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

Anna

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.
