Paro in Bhutan is where every journey into the kingdom begins. Home to Bhutan's only international airport, the valley sits at 2,280 metres and is lined with traditional farmhouses, terraced fields, and forested hillsides. For travellers on small group tours to Bhutan, Paro is both the first and last impression of the country.
The Paro Valley
The Paro Valley is one of Bhutan's most culturally significant regions, containing some of its oldest religious sites. Kyichu Lhakhang, believed to date from the 7th century, is among the earliest Buddhist temples in the country. Rinpung Dzong guards the valley entrance and remains one of the finest examples of traditional Bhutanese architecture, while the National Museum above it holds an extensive collection of costumes, religious paintings, and historical artefacts.
Tiger's Nest Monastery
The valley's most celebrated site is Taktsang Monastery, known as Tiger's Nest, clinging to a cliffside 900 metres above the valley floor. It is one of Bhutan's most sacred pilgrimage sites, drawing visitors from across the Buddhist world. The hike passes through pine forest with open valley views before reaching the cliff-edge complex. Expect the full round trip, including stops, to take approximately six hours.
