Bosnia and Herzegovina Tours & Holiday

Overview

An introduction to Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina sits at the meeting point of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Europe, a small country that wears its layered past openly. Cobbled bazaars give way to elegant arcades, minarets rise alongside church spires, and the karst landscapes of the interior unfold into river gorges and forested hills that see remarkably few visitors. For travellers seeking something genuinely off the beaten path in Europe, this is one of the continent's most rewarding and underrated destinations.

Our small group Bosnia and Herzegovina tours travel as part of a wider Balkans loop, placing this extraordinary country in the context of its neighbours while giving its two great cities — Mostar and Sarajevo — the time they deserve. Groups are capped at 12, led by an English-speaking tour leader, and built for travellers who want to understand what they're seeing rather than simply pass through it.

Authentic Europe Without the Crowds

Bosnia and Herzegovina remains one of the least visited countries in Europe. Its cities and landscapes have been largely spared the effects of mass tourism, giving travellers the kind of genuine, unhurried encounters that are increasingly hard to find on the continent.

01

Layers of History Unlike Anywhere Else

Illyrian, Roman, medieval Bosnian, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and 20th-century Yugoslav history have all left visible marks here. No other country in Europe compresses so many distinct historical periods into such a compact geography.

Layers of History Unlike Anywhere Else
02

A Capital That Demands Time

Sarajevo is one of Europe's most complex and compelling cities — a place where East and West have met, clashed and coexisted for centuries, and where the recent past is still woven into the fabric of daily life in ways that no guidebook fully prepares you for.

Outstanding Value in Europe
03

Outstanding Value in Europe

Bosnia and Herzegovina trips offer exceptional value compared with Western European destinations, with quality local food, coffee culture and hospitality at a fraction of the cost of comparable experiences elsewhere on the continent.

Highlights

The moments that make Bosnia and Herzegovina unforgettable

Mostar's Stari Most

The rebuilt 16th-century Ottoman bridge spanning the Neretva River is one of Europe's most iconic sights. Watch local divers launch from its stones into the river below, then cross on foot to explore the bazaar streets and craftsmen's workshops of the old town on either side.

Sarajevo's Old Town

Few European capitals carry their history so visibly. The cobbled Baščaršija quarter blends Ottoman coffee houses and craftsmen's stalls with Austro-Hungarian facades, while sites including the Latin Bridge and the Tunnel of Hope bring Sarajevo's more recent past into sharp and affecting focus.

The Siege of Sarajevo

The Tunnel of Hope — dug beneath the airport during the four-year siege of the 1990s — is one of the most powerful and quietly devastating museum experiences in Europe, told without theatrics through photographs, footage and the tunnel itself.

Visegrad and the Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge

This UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ottoman bridge spanning the Drina River was immortalised by Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić in his novel The Bridge on the Drina. It remains one of Bosnia's finest pieces of Ottoman engineering and one of the region's most literary landmarks.

Radimlja Necropolis

One of the largest and best-preserved medieval stećak gravestone sites in the Balkans, Radimlja holds hundreds of elaborately carved medieval tombstones set across open ground — a UNESCO-protected site that most visitors to the region never find.

The Balkans in Context

Bosnia and Herzegovina tours with Undiscovered Destinations are part of a wider Balkan journey taking in Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia — giving the country its proper regional context and making the cultural contrasts between neighbours one of the journey's great pleasures.

Bosnia and Herzegovina rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Bosnia and Herzegovina has a pleasantly varied climate shaped by its mix of continental interior and Mediterranean-influenced south. Spring (April to May) brings mild temperatures and green landscapes at their freshest — ideal for walking the old towns of Mostar and Sarajevo without summer crowds. Summer (June to August) can be warm to hot, particularly in the Neretva Valley around Mostar, though the higher interior stays cooler. Autumn is arguably the most atmospheric season, with golden light, quieter streets and comfortable temperatures well into October. Winters are cold and snowy inland, which gives the country a different but equally striking character.

Our Bosnia and Herzegovina tours depart in spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October), timing the visit to make the most of the best weather and the lightest tourist footfall.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Alexis

Fabulous, unusual destination, and great people. A private tour of somewhere little-visited, with great service from start to finish and excellent knowledge and advice from Undiscovered Destinations throughout.
