Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN); cash is widely accepted and ATMs are readily available in Sofia, Plovdiv and most towns on our itineraries. Tap water is generally safe to drink in cities, though bottled water is recommended in smaller mountain villages. Tipping is customary in restaurants — rounding up or adding 10% is the norm. Weather in the mountain regions can change quickly, particularly in the Rhodopes and Pirin, and layers are advisable even in summer. English is spoken in hotels and tourist areas, though less commonly in rural villages, where your tour leader provides full support throughout.
