Key experiences at Torres del Paine National Park

  1. Walk to the Mirador del Lago Grey

The path along the shore of Lake Grey leads to a viewpoint facing the Grey Glacier and the Macizo del Paine. Fragments of calved glacier ice drift across the lake's surface, and the wind off the ice field is a constant presence. It is one of the most direct encounters with active glaciation in the park.

  2. Stand before the Cuernos del Paine

The Cuernos are a separate formation from the Torres: darker, broader, and dramatically banded where ancient sedimentary rock meets lighter granite. Viewing them from the road and from the shores of Lago Nordenskjöld gives a clear sense of the geology that makes this park unlike anywhere else in South America.

  3. Visit the Salto Grande Waterfall

Where Lake Nordenskjöld drains into Lake Pehoé, the water drops sharply over a rocky ledge with the Cuernos framing the background. The walkway to the viewpoint is short, making this one of the most accessible and photographed spots in the park.

  4. Explore the Milodón Cave en Route

Before entering the park, the route passes the Milodón Cave, where the remains of a prehistoric ground sloth were discovered in the 19th century. A short walk leads through the cave complex, and a replica of the Milodón stands at the entrance. The "Silla del Diablo" rock formation nearby adds to the landscape's character.

  5. Cross into Patagonia from Argentina

The bus journey from El Calafate to Puerto Natales crosses the Argentine-Chilean border through open Patagonian steppe. The transition from Argentine pampas to the fjord landscape of southern Chile is gradual but distinct. For many travellers, the crossing itself is part of the experience of understanding this remote corner of South America.

About this place

The story behind Torres del Paine National Park

Torres del Paine National Park

Torres del Paine National Park sits in the far south of Chile, within the Magallanes region of Chilean Patagonia. The park takes its name from its most recognisable feature: three granite towers that rise sharply above the surrounding steppe and forest. Alongside the towers, the Cuernos del Paine, Grey Glacier, and a series of vivid turquoise lakes make this one of South America's most compelling natural landscapes.

What the Park Contains

The park encompasses a dramatic mix of terrain. Lake Grey sits beneath the Grey Glacier, which calves icebergs into the water throughout the year. The Cuernos del Paine, a distinct cluster of horn-shaped peaks, dominate the central skyline. Lago Nordenskjöld and Laguna Amarga reflect the peaks in their still waters on calm days. Guanacos, Andean condors, and foxes are among the wildlife regularly seen across the steppe and lakeshores.

Guided Day Walks and Viewpoints

For those on guided day visits, the park offers a strong selection of walks and spectacular viewpoints. The Mirador del Lago Grey gives views towards the glacier and the Macizo del Paine. The Salto Grande waterfall and Mirador del Lago Nordenskjöld are accessible on shorter walks. A visit to the Milodón Cave, located just outside Puerto Natales en route to the park, adds a fascinating historical and palaeontological interest to the journey.
