Overview

An introduction to East Timor

East Timor tours take you to one of Asia's youngest and least-visited nations — a country where Portuguese-era churches share the skyline with hilltop statues, and where tribal traditions have survived largely intact. The capital Dili is a relaxed base to begin exploring, before heading inland to the coffee highlands of Maubisse and up to the summit of Mt Ramelau, the island's highest peak, for a sunrise that stretches across the whole of Timor.

Our small group East Timor tours continue east along the old colonial coast through Baucau and on to Tutuala, where the ancient Ili Kere Kere cave paintings reveal 13,000 years of human history. A ferry crossing to Atauro Island opens up some of Southeast Asia's finest snorkelling above untouched coral, and the journey ends in quiet days on uninhabited Jaco Island. Both scheduled group departures and tailor-made East Timor travel packages are available for those who want to explore at their own pace.

One of Asia's Last Truly Undiscovered Destinations

East Timor receives very few international tourists, which means the sites, landscapes and cultural encounters on our East Timor tours feel genuinely authentic. There are no queues at the cave paintings, no crowds on Jaco Island — just the country as it actually is.

01

A Layered History Unlike Anywhere Else

Few countries in Asia carry the same depth of history in such a compact space. Portuguese colonial architecture, traditional animist villages, Catholic shrines and a hard-won independence story dating only to 2002 give East Timor holidays a cultural richness that stays with you.

World-Class Marine Environments

The waters around Atauro Island are regarded among the most biodiverse in Southeast Asia. For snorkellers and divers, East Timor offers a rare chance to explore pristine coral reefs that have seen little pressure from tourism or development.

Remarkable Landscapes from Coast to Summit

From uninhabited Jaco Island and the colonial coast around Baucau to the highland coffee country near Maubisse and the summit of Mt Ramelau, East Timor packs extraordinary geographic variety into a small and easily navigable island.

Highlights

The moments that make East Timor unforgettable

Sunrise from Mt Ramelau

Trek to the summit of East Timor's highest peak and watch the sun rise across the whole of Timor — a physically rewarding highlight of any East Timor tour and one of the finest viewpoints in Southeast Asia.

Snorkelling at Atauro Island

Cross the Wetar Strait by ferry to Atauro Island, where pristine coral reefs and exceptional marine diversity make this one of the region's most rewarding snorkelling destinations, still largely untouched by tourism.

Ancient Ili Kere Kere Cave Paintings

Journey to Tutuala in the far east of the island to explore the Ili Kere Kere caves, home to rock art estimated to be around 13,000 years old — one of East Timor's most remarkable and rarely visited cultural sites.

Dili's Colonial Waterfront

Explore the relaxed capital at the start of your East Timor holiday Portuguese era buildings, a vibrant market scene and a laid-back harbour front that reflects the country's layered history and resilient character.

Uninhabited Jaco Island

Reach the remote eastern tip of East Timor and spend time on Jaco Island — a protected, uninhabited island with white-sand beaches and clear water, accessible only by local boat and completely free of development.

Coffee Country Around Maubisse

Travel south from Dili into the central highlands and the coffee-growing region around Maubisse, where cooler temperatures, mountain scenery and one of the world's finest organic coffees make for a memorable contrast to the coast.

Weaving Villages Around Com

Visit traditional villages near Com on the eastern coast, where local artisans continue practising centuries-old weaving traditions — a quietly fascinating glimpse into the indigenous cultural life that shapes East Timor's identity.

Baucau and the Colonial Coast

Follow the old Portuguese coastal road east through Baucau, East Timor's second city, where crumbling colonial villas, a natural rock pool and a relaxed pace of life make it one of the country's most atmospheric stops.

East Timor rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

From the field

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Our East Timor tours depart in July, which falls squarely in the dry season — the best time to visit for comfortable travel conditions. The wet season runs roughly from November to April, bringing heavy rainfall and making mountain roads and remote areas difficult to access. July brings warm, mostly clear days ideal for hiking Mt Ramelau, snorkelling at Atauro Island and reaching the eastern sites around Tutuala. Nights at higher elevations can be cool, so lightweight layers are worth packing. Travellers who wish to visit outside of our scheduled July departures are welcome to enquire about a tailor-made East Timor holiday.

Looking to travel outside the typical windows? Our East Timor tailor-made team can advise on the best time for you.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Alexis

Fabulous, unusual destination, and great people. A private tour of somewhere little-visited, with great service from start to finish and excellent knowledge and advice from Undiscovered Destinations throughout.
