Overview

An introduction to Georgia

Georgia sits at the hinge between Europe and Asia — a small Caucasus country that carries the weight of eight millennia of civilisation without feeling the least bit heavy. Tbilisi, founded in the 4th century above warm sulphur springs, still wears the fingerprints of Persian, Ottoman, Russian and European rule on its old city streets, while Kakheti's vineyards trace back to what is widely regarded as the birthplace of wine. Tusheti's medieval watchtowers, the rock-hewn monastery of David Gareji and the sacred ancient capital of Mtskheta round out a country that changes character every hour of the road.

Our small group Georgia tours are capped at 12 people and led by dedicated English-speaking guides throughout. Whether you're drawn to a georgia wine tour through Kakheti's qvevri cellars, a mountain adventure crossing the Abano Pass into remote Tusheti, or a broader Caucasus loop taking in Armenia and Azerbaijan alongside Georgia, our itineraries are built around the places larger operators skip.

Georgia – Wild Tusheti

Georgia is one of the least known nations of Europe – in fact most people aren’t entirely sure whether it is actually in Europe. Hidden away and often eclipsed by its monumental neighbour it hides a wealth of diverse secrets. This trip encompasses the very best of the country: we spend time in Tbilisi and marvel at the numerous and diverse cultures that have left their mark on this city, from Ancient Persia and Medieval European crusaders to Imperial Russia and Ottoman Turkey and explore its delightful old city. We travel into the High Caucasus to the wild and untamed province of Tusheti where age old traditions are still entrenched into the culture. We explore the cave monasteries of David Gareji where 14 centuries of Georgian Christians have crafted an impressive rock-hewn monastic foundation. For lovers of wine we will also visit the ancient wine region of Kakheti, arguably the original home of all viticulture and taste the exquisite wines produced there. Our travels then take us over the dizzying heights of the Abano Pass, only seasonally open and a gateway to some of Europe’s most isolated villages. We spend time getting to know and understand the area and its tenacious and proudly isolated people, enjoying the wholehearted hospitality of family run guesthouses. Our exploration of the incredibly isolated and often seasonal Tush villages will include the option of some relatively straightforward, but highly rewarding walks where the beauty of the alpine-meadows contrasts with the awe-inspiring mountain scenery. Georgia is renowned for its local hospitality so travel with us on this cultural and historical adventure and discover the furthest reaches of this intriguing and stunning country where few outsiders tread.

Why visit

What makes Georgia worth the journey

A place apart

The Birthplace of Wine

Georgia's claim to be the world's oldest wine culture is backed by archaeological evidence stretching back around 8,000 years. Kakheti's qvevri-fermented wines — amber-coloured, tannic and unlike anything produced in Europe — are reason enough to make the journey.

01

Untouched Mountain Culture

Tusheti remains one of the least visited highland regions in Europe. The combination of medieval watchtower villages, summer herding traditions and total absence of mass tourism creates a mountain experience with genuine depth.

Georgia-Tusheti-Tour
02

Compact but Extraordinarily Varied

In under two weeks you can move from the cosmopolitan streets of Tbilisi to the wine valleys of Kakheti, the rock monasteries of the semi-desert south and the high passes of the Greater Caucasus — an extraordinary range of landscape and culture for a country this size.

03

A Natural Gateway to the Wider Caucasus

Georgia's position between Armenia and Azerbaijan makes it the natural heart of any Caucasus journey. Several of our georgia travel packages extend the adventure across borders into Armenian monasteries, Azerbaijan's Zoroastrian fire temples and Yerevan's Soviet-era boulevards.

Highlights

The moments that make Georgia unforgettable

Old Tbilisi

A city layered with Persian, Ottoman, Russian and European history, Tbilisi rewards slow walking. The old Maidan quarter packs the Narikala citadel, Metekhi Temple, Sioni Cathedral and the sulphur bathhouses into a compact, atmospheric riverside stretch that feels unlike anywhere else in the Caucasus.

Tusheti Province

One of the most isolated regions in Europe, Tusheti is reached by crossing the seasonal Abano Pass into a landscape of medieval stone watchtowers, alpine meadows and ancient villages where the Tush people still practise traditions unchanged for centuries.

Kakheti Wine Region

Georgia's premier wine-growing region stretches east from Tbilisi through monastery-dotted valleys to the town of Sighnaghi. The Kakheti method of fermenting wine in buried clay qvevri vessels is unique in the world — tastings here are a lesson in 8,000 years of viticulture rather than just a glass of wine.

David Gareji Monastery

Carved into a cliff face on the semi-desert border with Azerbaijan, David Gareji is one of Georgia's most dramatic sacred sites. Fourteen centuries of monks have expanded this rock-hewn complex of caves, frescoes and cells across the hillside in a way that photography barely does justice.

Mtskheta

Georgia's ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mtskheta sits at the confluence of two rivers just north of Tbilisi. The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the hilltop Jvari Monastery — visible from all around the valley — have been places of Christian pilgrimage since the 4th century.

Gergeti Trinity Church

Sitting at over 2,000 metres beneath the great summit of Mt Kazbek in the Greater Caucasus, the medieval Gergeti Trinity Church is one of the most photographed images in Georgia — and one of the most rewarding to reach on our Caucasus Discovery tour.

Georgia rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Georgia's climate varies by region and altitude. Spring (April–May) brings mild temperatures, blooming landscapes and excellent conditions for sightseeing and walking. Summer (June–September) is warm and dry, ideal for exploring Tbilisi, Kakheti's vineyards and the mountain regions. Autumn (September–October) offers harvest season in Kakheti, colourful scenery and wine festivals. Winters can be cold, especially in the mountains, and remote areas such as Tusheti are inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.

Our Georgia holidays operate in summer for the Wild Tusheti itinerary, while the Cradle of Winemaking tours run in spring and autumn when conditions are best for exploring the country's renowned wine region.

We had a wonderful holiday in Azerbaijan and Georgia — flawlessly organised. Travelling as a family of four we were able to see so many wonderful sights in both countries. Both countries were delightful in every way!

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

I have been fortunate enough to travel to almost 100 countries across every continent except Antarctica—which remains firmly at the top of my bucket list.

What I love most about travel is the sense of freedom and the anticipation of the unexpected. You never quite know what lies around the next corner. It might be waking in a remote Guyanese rainforest to the deafening chorus of Howler Monkeys, discovering a rare frog species found only on the summit of a Venezuelan tepui, chatting about cricket with passionate locals aboard a train in India, or joining an impromptu game of badminton with young monks in Bhutan. I also enjoy connecting with a destination through its food, discovering the stories, traditions, and people behind the local cuisine—most recently while travelling through Georgia.

Choosing favourite places is almost impossible, but a few experiences stand out. Marojejy National Park in north-eastern Madagascar is a breathtaking rainforest that feels as though it has been lifted straight from Jurassic Park, home to the critically endangered Silky Sifaka, one of the world's rarest primates. More recently, I treasured a rail journey through Romania with my son, lying in our sleeper compartment with the window open on a warm evening as we watched the golden landscapes of Transylvania drift by. Another unforgettable highlight was trekking through Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for a truly humbling encounter with the magnificent Mountain Gorillas.

More recently, exploring the incredible biodiversity of Panama and the lush coffee-growing region of Colombia provided yet more memorable experiences, each offering a wonderful combination of spectacular scenery, fascinating wildlife, and warm local hospitality.

Next on the horizon is Kazakhstan, where I am developing an exciting new itinerary. I'm looking forward to discovering the immense landscapes, rich nomadic heritage, and hidden treasures of this remarkable Central Asian nation.

For me, travel is far more than simply visiting new places—it's about meaningful experiences, genuine human connections, and moments that stay with you long after you've returned home. It is a privilege I never take for granted, and one that continues to fuel my curiosity and passion for exploring the world.

With more than 25 years of experience helping travellers turn their dream journeys into reality, I'd feel privileged to help you plan your next adventure. Whether you're looking to join a carefully curated small-group tour or would prefer a bespoke tailor-made itinerary, I can help create an unforgettable travel experience almost anywhere in the world.
