Overview

An introduction to Ghana

Ghana tours take you into a country that earns its reputation as West Africa's most welcoming nation at every turn. The Ashanti kingdom still holds genuine cultural authority in Kumasi, the slave trade left its most visible and poignant mark at Cape Coast Castle and Elmina, and the forested southwest — from the canopy walk at Kakum National Park to the stilt village of Nzulezu — delivers experiences that are impossible to find anywhere else on the continent.

Our small group Ghana tours are built around authentic encounters — visiting Makola Market in Accra, watching Kente cloth being woven at its source, and canoeing across Lake Tadane to Nzulezu. For those who want to go further, our Ghana travel packages extend into Togo and Benin, combining the Ashanti heartland with the voodoo traditions and royal history of West Africa's Atlantic coast.

A place apart

The warmest welcome in West Africa

Ghana's reputation as the most welcoming country in West Africa is not marketing — it is the lived experience of almost every traveller who comes here. That openness shapes every Ghana holiday, from local market visits to conversations with guides who genuinely want to share their country.

01

Living Ashanti culture

Unlike many African cultural destinations where tradition is packaged for tourists, the Ashanti kingdom in Kumasi still holds real authority in everyday Ghanaian life. Visiting Manhyia Palace, watching Kente cloth woven at source and walking through Kejetia Market is to experience a culture very much alive.

02

History that demands to be witnessed

Cape Coast Castle and Elmina stand as the most direct and sober reminders of the transatlantic slave trade anywhere in the world. Ghana tours that include these sites offer a form of historical education that changes how you see everything that follows.

Landscapes from coast to rainforest
03

Landscapes from coast to rainforest

A single Ghana trip can take you from the Atlantic coast and its historic slave fortresses through the Volta region's waterfalls and highland forests to the stilt villages of the south and the rich biodiversity of Ankasa Reserve — a range of landscapes few destinations can match.

Highlights

The moments that make Ghana unforgettable

Cape Coast Castle

One of the most moving sites in West Africa, Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade is laid bare. A visit here, paired with Assin Manso, is among the most powerful experiences on any Ghana tour.

Kakum National Park Canopy Walk

Walk suspended high above the rainforest floor on a network of bridges in Kakum National Park. One of West Africa's most biologically rich ecosystems, the forest below teems with wildlife, and the views from the canopy are extraordinary.

Ashanti Kingdom, Kumasi

Kumasi is the cultural capital of Ghana and the living heart of the Ashanti kingdom. Ghana tour packages that include Kumasi take in the Manhyia Palace, the vast Kejetia Market and the origins of Kente cloth and adinkra symbols — a deeply immersive cultural experience.

Nzulezu Stilt Village

Accessible only by canoe across Lake Tadane, Nzulezu is a village built entirely on stilts over water. The canoe journey through the wetlands and the experience of daily life here make it one of the most memorable stops on any Ghana holiday.

Wli Waterfalls, Volta Region

The Wli Waterfalls in the Volta region are among the most impressive in West Africa. The surrounding forest is rich in birdlife and the walk to the falls passes through landscapes that feel worlds away from the busy coastal cities.

Traditional Kente Cloth Weaving

Watch master weavers at work producing the vibrant Kente cloth that is synonymous with Ghanaian identity. Seeing the craft at its source near Kumasi gives context that no museum exhibit can replicate.

Accra's Markets and History

Ghana's capital rewards unhurried exploration. Makola Market, the colonial district of Jamestown, the National Museum and the opportunity to see the extraordinary fantasy coffins of Teshie Nungua all feature on our Ghana trips through Accra.

Ankasa Reserve Rainforest

In the far southwest, Ankasa National Park protects one of Ghana's last areas of intact rainforest. A visit here rounds off Ghana travel packages that explore the full range of the country's landscapes, from the coast to the forest interior.

Ghana rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Our Ghana tours depart in October, February and April - all excellent windows for travel. October sits at the end of the dry season, when the heat is manageable and the roads are at their most accessible. February and April fall in the drier period between the two rainy seasons, with warm temperatures, lower humidity and reliable conditions for overland travel. The Voodoo Festival departure in late December and January coincides with Benin's dry season and the national festival itself.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

Anna

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.
