Overview

An introduction to Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau tours take you to one of the least-visited countries on earth - a tiny former Portuguese colony tucked between Senegal and Guinea on West Africa's Atlantic coast. Mangrove rivers, a palm-fringed coastline and the offshore Bijagos Archipelago define the landscape, while ancient animist traditions, sacred forests and a population of saltwater hippos make this one of Africa's most genuinely extraordinary destinations.

Our small group Guinea-Bissau tours focus on the Bijagos Islands, where communities maintain some of the most traditional lifestyles anywhere on the continent. The capital, Bissau, offers a quieter introduction - crumbling Portuguese architecture, colourful markets and a pace of life that feels entirely its own. Many travellers choose to combine a Guinea-Bissau trip with neighbouring Senegal for a fuller West African experience, and our Senegal and Guinea-Bissau Explorer does exactly that over fifteen days.

Why visit

What makes Guinea-Bissau worth the journey

A place apart

One of Africa's Least-Visited Countries

Very few Western travellers ever make it to Guinea-Bissau, which means the encounters here are genuinely unfiltered. There are no tourist traps, no polished routines for visitors — just communities living as they have for generations, and travellers fortunate enough to witness it.

01

The Bijagos — A World Apart

The Bijagos Islands are unlike anywhere else in Africa. Animist traditions remain the living framework of daily life, sacred forests are protected by custom rather than fencing, and the islands sit within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that makes the wildlife watching as remarkable as the culture.

02

Wildlife That Can't Be Found Elsewhere

Saltwater hippos swimming between islands, sea turtles nesting on Poilao, and rich birdlife throughout the archipelago make Guinea-Bissau a destination of genuine natural rarity. These aren't curated safari experiences - they are simply what happens here.

A Natural Pairing with Senegal

Guinea-Bissau sits on the edge of a wider West African journey. Combining it with Senegal - Goree Island, the Saloum Delta, Djoudj National Park - creates one of the region's most varied and rewarding itineraries, available on our 15-day Senegal and Guinea-Bissau Explorer.

Highlights

The moments that make Guinea-Bissau unforgettable

The Bijagos Archipelago

A chain of low-lying islands off the Guinea-Bissau coast, the Bijagos Archipelago is one of West Africa's most extraordinary places — remote, biodiverse and home to communities whose animist traditions have remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Saltwater Hippos of the Bijagos

Guinea-Bissau is one of the very few places where hippos have adapted to saltwater living, swimming freely between the islands of the archipelago. Spotting them among the mangrove channels is one of the most unusual wildlife encounters in Africa.

Orango National Park

A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve within the Bijagos, Orango protects a remarkable landscape of tidal creeks, forest and beach. It is the heartland of the saltwater hippo population and a place where traditional island life continues undisturbed.

Village of Eticoga

Sacred to the memory of Queen Okinka Pampa, Eticoga is one of the most culturally significant villages in the Bijagos. A visit here offers a rare and moving glimpse into the matriarchal traditions that shape island life.

Sea Turtle Nesting at Poilao

Between October and January, Poilao Island becomes one of Africa's most important sea turtle nesting sites, with green turtles coming ashore in significant numbers. December guinea-bissau tours offer the chance to witness this remarkable natural event.

Bissau — The Quiet Capital

Guinea-Bissau's unhurried capital is a place of faded Portuguese colonial architecture, craft markets and riverside life. It is the gateway to every journey into the country and has a quiet, distinctive character entirely its own.

Lake Anor by Boat and Foot

Exploring Lake Anor — accessible by both boat and on foot from the islands — gives a deeper sense of the Bijagos interior, where wildlife, birdlife and the sounds of the forest accompany every step.

Traditional Dance in Ambuduco

The village of Ambuduco is known for its traditional ceremonial dances — one of those rare, unscripted encounters that define a Guinea-Bissau holiday and stay with travellers long after they return home.

Guinea-Bissau rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Our Guinea-Bissau tours depart in December, March and May — each offering a distinct experience of this small West African country. December falls in the dry season, when skies are clear, temperatures are warm and travel between the Bijagos Islands is at its most straightforward. March continues into the dry season with excellent conditions across the archipelago, while May brings the first warmth of the approaching rains, vivid greenery and quieter islands. Between October and January, Poilao Island in the Bijagos becomes one of Africa's most important sea turtle nesting sites, adding a remarkable wildlife dimension to December departures.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

Anna

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.
