Overview

An introduction to Iraq

Iraq is one of the ancient world's great stages — the land where writing was invented, where the world's first cities rose, and where empires from Assyria to Babylon left their mark on human history. Today, Iraqi Kurdistan offers a region of dramatic mountain landscapes, sacred sites, and extraordinary warmth from its people, largely untouched by mass tourism.

Our small group Iraq tours focus on the Kurdistan Region, an area as compelling as it is misunderstood. From the UNESCO-listed Erbil Citadel and the sacred Yazidi valley of Lalish to the poignant memorials of Halabja and the prehistoric wonder of Shanidar Cave, these Iraq travel packages deliver genuine depth in a part of the world few travellers have yet discovered.

A Cradle of Civilisation

Iraq is where writing was invented, where the first cities were built, and where some of history's greatest empires rose and fell. Travelling here connects visitors to the very origins of human culture in a way no other destination can match.

01

Genuine Off-the-Beaten-Track Travel

Iraqi Kurdistan remains largely undiscovered by international tourism. Visitor numbers are low, sites are uncrowded, and encounters with local people are unmediated by a tourist industry — making Iraq trips here feel authentically exploratory.

02

Extraordinary Warmth & Hospitality

Kurdish hospitality is legendary. Travellers on our Iraq tours consistently remark on the openness and generosity of the people they meet — from guides and museum curators to families encountered along the way.

Religious & Cultural Diversity in One Region

Kurdistan is home to Yazidis, Christians, Muslims, and communities whose roots predate all of these faiths. Sacred temples, ancient monasteries, historic synagogues, and mosques sit within driving distance of one another.

Highlights

The moments that make Iraq unforgettable

Erbil Citadel & Qaysari Bazaar

One of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, Erbil's UNESCO-listed citadel rises above a sprawling traditional bazaar. Wandering through the covered market and up to the fortress walls is an immersion in Kurdish urban life that stretches back millennia.

Lalish & the Yazidi Faith

The Lalish valley is the spiritual homeland of the Yazidi people, whose ancient religion blends elements of Zoroastrianism, Islam, and older beliefs. The conical-towered temples and sacred springs here offer one of the most distinctive and moving religious experiences in the Middle East.

Gaugamela Battlefield

In 331 BC, Alexander the Great defeated King Darius III on this plain in what proved to be one of history's decisive battles. Standing on the site today, with the Kurdistan mountains on the horizon, is a quietly powerful historical encounter.

Halabja & Amna Suraka

Halabja's memorials and the Amna Suraka (Red House) museum in Suleimaniyah document the Kurdish people's suffering under Saddam Hussein's regime. Confronting and important, these sites ensure the human story of Kurdistan is never reduced to mere archaeology.

Shanidar Cave

One of the most significant prehistoric archaeological sites in the world, Shanidar Cave yielded Neanderthal remains that rewrote understanding of early human behaviour. Set in stunning mountain scenery, it combines scientific importance with a remarkable natural setting.

Ahmed Awa Waterfall

A natural beauty spot in the mountains of Suleimaniyah governorate, Ahmed Awa is a place of cascading water, green gorges, and local life. It offers a counterpoint to the historical intensity of the rest of the Iraq tour — a moment to simply enjoy Kurdistan's landscape.

Iraq rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Iraqi Kurdistan experiences a continental climate shaped by its mountainous terrain. Summers (June–August) are hot and dry, with temperatures in Erbil regularly exceeding 35°C, making outdoor exploration uncomfortable. Spring (March–May) brings mild temperatures, green hillsides, and wildflowers across the mountain valleys — one of the most scenic times to visit. Autumn is the sweet spot: temperatures ease to a pleasant 20–25°C, skies are reliably clear, and the landscape retains its warmth and colour without the summer heat.

Our Iraq tour packages depart in October, timed to make the most of autumn's ideal conditions across Kurdistan.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Alexis

Fabulous, unusual destination, and great people. A private tour of somewhere little-visited, with great service from start to finish and excellent knowledge and advice from Undiscovered Destinations throughout.

Kurdistan's variety makes it exceptionally well-suited to a tailor-made itinerary. The region spans everything from the ancient urban fabric of Erbil and the mountain clifftop town of Amadiya to the deep valleys around Barzan and the sacred stillness of Lalish — and the pace at which you move between them is entirely yours to decide. A private traveller might spend longer exploring the bazaars and museums of Suleimaniyah, take a slower route through the mountain passes to Shanidar Cave, or combine Kurdistan with neighbouring regions for a broader journey across the ancient Near East.

Undiscovered Destinations can arrange private transport, dedicated local guides, and a handpicked selection of accommodation throughout. Speak to our team to start planning your Iraq holiday.
