The 4000 Islands Laos — known locally as Si Phan Don — sit in the far south of the country where the Mekong River fans out across a width of 14km, scattering hundreds of sandy islands between its channels. The name is an approximation: at the height of the wet season the count rises, in the dry season it falls. What stays constant is the atmosphere: roosters, rice paddies, wooden boats, and a tranquil pace of life that feels entirely removed from the modern world.
Don Khone and the Islands
The most visited of the islands is Don Khone, which serves as the peaceful base for our travellers. Characterised by wooden stilt villages, river-facing guesthouses, and a distinctly laid-back charm, it is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere of the archipelago. The islands see far fewer visitors than the north of the country, offering a genuine glimpse of rural Lao life largely unchanged for generations.
Kon Phapheng Waterfall
Located just north of the Cambodian border, the Kon Phapheng Waterfall is the largest waterfall by volume in Asia — the entire Mekong River descends here in a thunderous curtain of white water, making for a truly amazing spectacle. It is visited as a short stop en route from the 4000 Islands to Pakse, forming a natural full stop to any visit to the south of Laos.
Visiting with Undiscovered Destinations
Our guided group tours in Laos include the 4000 Islands as the final chapter of a longer journey through southern Laos, arriving after the Bolaven Plateau for a relaxing two-night stay on Don Khone Island. After an initial afternoon at leisure to relax by the pool and immerse in the peaceful atmosphere, the following day is dedicated to exploring the islands and experiencing the slower pace of life along the Mekong.
In the morning, guests have the choice of gentle cycling past the rice fields and friendly villages of the island, or exploring by tuk tuk. In the afternoon, a local fisherman takes the group out on a traditional wooden boat to the fishing grounds, where you can try your luck at throwing nets into the water. At dusk, the evening ends with a delicious BBQ at a secluded spot while a guide shares local myths of the Mekong. The route then continues north to Pakse, stopping at the magnificent Kon Phapheng Waterfall along the way.
The 4000 Islands feature on both our Laos – The Secret Heart of Asia and Laos and Cambodia Encompassed itineraries, both operated with a maximum of 12 travellers for a more immersive small group experience.
