Laos – The Secret Heart of Asia

A unique tour to South East Asia’s best kept secret, Laos, where we get well beyond the tourist trail. We start this cultural odyssey in Vientiane, Laos’ delightfully friendly capital, studded with crumbling French mansions, bougainvillea-blooming streets and steaming noodle stalls. Next up is the little visited North of Laos to experience the ethnic diversity of the many hill tribes in the region of Luang Namtha and observe local customs and traditions. A 2-day journey down the mighty Mekong River then awaits culminating in an arrival in Luang Prabang, which captivates even the most jaded travellers with its brew of gleaming temple roofs, crumbling French provincial architecture and multi-ethnic inhabitants. Nest we head south to the spectacular lush jungle of the Bolaven Plateau and immerse ourselves in authentic coffee culture and visit some of the most alluring scenery in Asia, the landscape scattered with volcanos and sparkling waterfalls. The conclusion of this off the beaten track adventure takes us to the enchanting 4000 islands, an area where time stands still, and revel in the joy of leisurely exploring villages by bicycle or tuk tuk and even try your hand at fishing. Join us to experience the hidden charms of Laos.

About this place

The story behind Luang Namtha

Luang Namtha

Luang Namtha sits in the far north of the country and is the most ethnically diverse region in Laos. The area is home to a patchwork of ethnic minority communities, each with its own language, dress, and craft traditions. Where much of Southeast Asia has been shaped by mass tourism, Luang Namtha remains genuinely off the beaten track, a place where village life carries on largely as it always has

Nam Ha National Park

The Nam Ha National Park surrounds the town and is one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the country. The forest provides the backdrop for easy-grade jungle trekking that passes waterfalls, traditional medicine plants, and animal tracks. Local guides explain what they see along the way, from edible jungle leaves to signs of wildlife in the undergrowth

Hill Tribe Villages and Traditional Crafts

The communities around Luang Namtha offer some of the most authentic cultural encounters in Laos. The Lanten people, in particular, are known for their traditional weaving and bamboo paper making, crafts that visitors can observe in family homes and even try themselves. The town's exotic night market is a quieter, more local affair than anything found further south, and makes for a good introduction to the region's colour and produce.
