Overview

An introduction to Latvia

Latvia is the quiet middle of the Baltic trio — a low-lying, forested country where roughly half the land is woodland, laced with rivers, amber-coloured dunes and old Hanseatic towns that traded long before the region modernised. Riga, the capital, is one of Europe's great Art Nouveau cities, its UNESCO-listed Old Town a warren of cobbled lanes, spires and merchant houses. Beyond the capital lies Gauja National Park, castle-topped river gorges, Baltic fishing villages and a coastline most travellers never reach.

Our small group Latvia tours travel as part of a wider Baltic loop, pairing Riga with Estonia and Lithuania in a single fully escorted journey. With a maximum of 12 travellers, an English-speaking tour leader throughout, and characterful 4 and 5-star hotels chosen for location, our Latvia holidays are designed for travellers who want more than a city break. There are no compulsory single supplements on any of our departures.

Why visit

What makes Latvia worth the journey

Latvia landscape
A place apart

One of Europe's great undiscovered capitals

Riga is consistently rated among Europe's finest city-break destinations yet draws a fraction of the visitors that Prague or Budapest attract. Its Art Nouveau architecture is unmatched anywhere on the continent, and its Old Town retains a genuinely lived-in character.

01

Nature right on the doorstep

Gauja National Park is less than an hour from central Riga — medieval castles, river gorges, forest trails and a working amber workshop within easy reach of the capital. Latvia packs an unusual diversity of landscape into a small country.

A story worth knowing

Latvia's history — Hanseatic trading past, German and Soviet occupation, the Singing Revolution and enthusiastic return to Europe — gives any visit a layered context that rewards curious travellers. Our tour leaders bring that story to life throughout the journey.

The Baltic loop makes sense
03

The Baltic loop makes sense

Latvia sits naturally between Estonia and Lithuania, and experiencing all three Baltic capitals on a single journey is one of the most coherent multi-country itineraries in Europe. Our tours cover all three without rushing.

Highlights

The moments that make Latvia unforgettable

Riga's Old Town & Art Nouveau District

Riga's UNESCO-listed Old Town is a compact maze of Gothic spires, cobbled lanes and merchant architecture stretching back to the Hanseatic era. A short walk away, the Art Nouveau district contains one of Europe's densest concentrations of Jugendstil facades.

Gauja National Park

Latvia's most dramatic landscape unfolds along the Gauja River valley, where sandstone cliffs, pine forests and medieval castle ruins rise above one of the country's most scenic stretches of countryside.

Turaida Castle

Perched above the Gauja Valley, Turaida Castle is one of the finest medieval fortresses in the Baltic region, its distinctive red-brick tower visible for miles. The surrounding museum reserve brings Latvia's medieval history to life with exhibits, woodland trails and views across the river gorge.

Amber Workshops

Latvia sits on the southern shore of the Baltic amber belt, and the craft has been practised here for centuries. Our tours include a visit to the workshop of amber craftsman Harijs Jakobsons in the Gauja Valley.

Jurmala & the Baltic Coast

Jurmala stretches along the Gulf of Riga as a long arc of white-sand beach backed by pine forest and wooden art nouveau villas. It is the coast that Latvians have retreated to for generations, and on our Latvia holidays the contrast with Riga .

Ragaciems & Lapmežciems

Two Baltic fishing villages that the tour coaches skip: Ragaciems for its working harbour and traditional way of life, and Lapmežciems for the boardwalk trail through Kaniera Lake's reed beds and coastal wetlands.

Latvia rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

Sweet spot: May

Latvia has a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers (June–August) are warm, with long daylight hours that are ideal for exploring Riga and the Baltic coast. Late spring and early autumn bring mild temperatures and colourful scenery, making them excellent times for walking in the national parks and river valleys. Winters are cold and often snowy, giving Riga's Old Town a distinctly Baltic atmosphere.

For most travellers, spring and early summer offer the best balance of pleasant weather, fewer crowds and long evenings. Our small-group Latvia tours depart in May and July, taking advantage of the country's most rewarding travel season.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Alexis

Fabulous, unusual destination, and great people. A private tour of somewhere little-visited, with great service from start to finish and excellent knowledge and advice from Undiscovered Destinations throughout.
