Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Yugoslav layers all coexist in a single small country. A morning in Skopje alone spans a Roman fortress, a 15th-century Turkish bathhouse and a pedestrian bridge that has stood since the Ottoman era.
Lake Ohrid is believed to be between two and five million years old — one of the oldest lakes on earth and home to endemic species found nowhere else. Its clarity and the frescoed churches along its shores make it unlike anywhere else in Europe.

North Macedonia has a continental climate with warm, dry summers and cold winters, moderated by Mediterranean influences in the south. Spring (April–May) brings mild temperatures, green landscapes and wildflowers, while summer (June–August) is hot and sunny, particularly around Skopje and Lake Ohrid. Autumn (September–October) offers cooler weather, colourful scenery and fewer crowds, making it one of the most enjoyable times to visit. Winter brings colder temperatures and snowfall in the higher mountain regions.
