Overview

An introduction to Pacific Islands

The Pacific Islands stretch across a vast arc of ocean from Micronesia's ancient ruins to Melanesia's volcanic ridgelines and the coral atolls of Polynesia. These scattered island nations — among them Palau, Nauru, Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea — each carry their own language, culture and landscape, connected only by water and a shared remoteness from the rest of the world. Few regions on Earth remain as genuinely undiscovered, or as quietly extraordinary.

Our small group Pacific Islands tours travel by local knowledge and unhurried design, reaching destinations most travellers never reach. With a maximum of 8 guests, these Pacific Islands tour packages span Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia — uncovering ancient stone cities, active volcanoes, Polynesian feasting traditions and the tribal communities of Papua New Guinea's highlands in a single, remarkable journey.

A place apart

Among the World's Least-Visited Destinations

Countries such as Nauru, Kiribati and the Solomon Islands receive only a handful of independent visitors each year. These Pacific Islands trips reach places that simply aren't on the mainstream travel radar — and likely never will be.

01

A Region of Extraordinary Cultural Diversity

From Micronesian stone cities to Polynesian ceremony and Melanesian tribal traditions, the Pacific Islands hold more cultural variety per square kilometre than almost anywhere else on Earth.

A Region of Extraordinary Cultural Diversity
02

Active Volcanoes, Turquoise Lagoons and Coral Atolls

The natural range here is startling: stand on the rim of Yasur's crater in Vanuatu, snorkel the Rock Islands of Palau, drift across Buada Lagoon in Nauru and watch coral atolls flatten into the horizon from the deck of a small craft.

Nan Madol in Pohnpei is one of the Pacific's great ancient wonders, and a UNESCO-listed site that almost no independent traveller reaches without expert guidance. Our Pacific Islands tour packages make it accessible.

Highlights

The moments that make Pacific Islands unforgettable

Nan Madol, Pohnpei

The mysterious stone city of Nan Madol sits off the eastern shore of Pohnpei in Micronesia, built across nearly a hundred artificial islets. Once the ceremonial seat of the Saudeleur Dynasty, its basalt walls and tidal canals are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Pacific's most haunting ancient sites.

Nauru's Phosphate Pinnacles

The world's third-smallest country is a place unlike any other: a raised coral island whose interior is defined by jagged phosphate pinnacles, colonial relics and Buada Lagoon. A circle island tour here is an encounter with a quietly surreal and little-visited corner of the Pacific.

Tarawa, Kiribati

Tarawa's lagoon and its wartime battle sites carry some of the most significant WWII history in the Pacific. A visit to the sacred sites of Kiribati, alongside its local traditions and remote coral setting, offers a rare and moving insight into this seldom-visited nation.

Samoa — Fa'a Sāmoa and Natural Landscapes

In Samoa, the concept of fa'a Sāmoa — the Samoan way of life — shapes every encounter. Explore vibrant local markets, visit Robert Louis Stevenson's former home and travel through rugged volcanic scenery on one of Polynesia's most culturally rooted islands.

Traditional Tongan Feasting and Island Heritage

Tonga's traditions run deep: a Polynesian kingdom that was never colonised, with a living culture of feasting, craftsmanship and ceremony. Our Pacific Islands travel packages include a traditional Tongan feast and time in villages where these customs are still at the centre of daily life.

Mount Yasur, Vanuatu

Mount Yasur on Tanna Island is one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes. Our Pacific Islands trips include a twilight ascent to the crater rim, where lava eruptions light the sky from just metres away — an experience found nowhere else on Earth.

Pacific Islands rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

From the field

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

The Pacific Islands span both hemispheres and cover an enormous expanse of ocean, so climate varies considerably across the region. As a broad guide, the drier season across much of Melanesia and Polynesia — including Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Samoa and Tonga — runs from approximately May to October, when humidity is lower and the risk of tropical cyclones is minimal. Papua New Guinea's highlands, where our tours spend time in the Wahgi Valley, are generally cooler year-round than the coastal lowlands. Micronesian nations such as Pohnpei and Kiribati receive rainfall throughout the year, though conditions remain warm and tropical. The heat is consistent across the region: expect temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius almost everywhere. Undiscovered Destinations' Pacific Islands tours depart in June, July and October, timed to travel within the more settled dry-season window across the majority of destinations on the itinerary.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

Anna

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Alexis

Fabulous, unusual destination, and great people. A private tour of somewhere little-visited, with great service from start to finish and excellent knowledge and advice from Undiscovered Destinations throughout.

Didn’t find your perfect Pacific Islands trip?

We’ll build one around you.

The Pacific's sheer scale and diversity make it an ideal destination for a private, tailored journey. A tailor-made Pacific Islands holiday might linger longer in Samoa's volcanic interior, spend additional time with tribal communities in Papua New Guinea's Wahgi Valley, or focus on the marine environments of Palau and the Solomon Islands — following your own pace rather than a shared itinerary. Undiscovered Destinations can arrange private transport, specialist local guides and a carefully selected mix of accommodation across the islands, from beachfront lodges to locally run guesthouses.
