Overview

An introduction to São Tomé and Príncipe

São Tomé and Príncipe tours take you to one of the world's most genuinely undiscovered destinations - twin volcanic islands straddling the equator off central Africa, welcoming fewer than 30,000 foreign visitors a year. The Portuguese colonial legacy runs deep: faded town squares, Forro and Angolar Creole spoken nowhere else on earth, and the great roças - plantation estates that once supplied much of the world's cocoa - slowly reawakening after decades of jungle reclaim.

The cultural texture feels closer to Brazil or Cape Verde than to East Africa, shaped by a distinct Portuguese-Creole blend of food, music and architecture found nowhere else. Our small group São Tomé and Príncipe holidays travel from the colonial streets and Corallo Chocolate Factory of São Tomé Town to the Monte Café and Nova Moka coffee and cocoa plantations in the interior, the dramatic volcanic coastline at Boca do Inferno, the equator crossing at Ilhéu das Rolas, and the eco-lodges of Príncipe Island - with the option to extend into neighbouring Angola for a deeper West and Central Africa adventure.

What makes São Tomé and Príncipe worth the journey

Genuinely Undiscovered

Fewer than 30,000 foreign visitors a year make São Tomé and Príncipe one of the least-visited island destinations on the planet. No cruise ship crowds, no resort infrastructure — just an archipelago the world has largely forgotten.

01

Plantation Immersion

You don't just visit the roças — you sleep in them. The restored plantation guesthouses of São Tomé are unique in the world: colonial architecture, equatorial forest all around and a direct line to the islands' cocoa history.

02

Portuguese-Creole Culture

The culture here feels closer to Brazil or Cape Verde than to mainland Africa. Forro and Angolar Creole, the rhythms of puxa and danço-congo music, and a cuisine built on cocoa, fish and palm oil make São Tomé unlike anywhere else.

Two Islands in One Trip

A São Tomé and Príncipe holiday covers two very different islands — busy, characterful São Tomé with its colonial past, and the quieter, wilder Príncipe with its eco-lodges and untouched rainforest.

Highlights

The moments that make São Tomé and Príncipe unforgettable

São Tomé Town

Explore the colonial heart of the capital on foot — Independence Square, the National Museum, the bustling market and an unforgettable chocolate tasting at the Corallo Chocolate Factory.

Monte Café & Nova Moka Plantations

Walk into the green interior to meet the producers behind São Tomé's celebrated cocoa and coffee, with rainforest views from the old roça at Saudade.

Ilhéu das Rolas — The Equator Island

Take a boat to this tiny island straddling the equator, hike to the equator marker and swim at beautiful Praia Café with its clear Atlantic waters.

Príncipe Island

Fly to São Tomé's quieter sister island for two days of kayaking, diving, plantation visits and genuine island solitude at eco-lodge Roça Sundy.

Diogo Vaz Cocoa Plantation

Cycle or drive through the Mucumbli area to this working plantation for an immersive deep-dive into São Tomé's centuries-old cocoa heritage and the fermentation process.

Boca do Inferno & 7 Ondas Beach

Travel the dramatic east coast, stopping at the volcanic rock formations of Boca do Inferno and the wild surf beach of 7 Ondas on the way south to São João dos Angolares.

The Roças — Plantation Life

Sleep inside restored colonial plantation houses — once the engine of the world's cocoa trade — now quiet, atmospheric guesthouses deep in the island's rainforest.

Angola Extension

For travellers with more time, the islands pair naturally with an adventure into neighbouring Angola — combining Luanda, the Calandula Falls and the landscapes of Namibe and Lubango.

São Tomé and Príncipe rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

São Tomé and Príncipe sits on the equator, so temperatures stay warm year round, typically between 25°C and 30°C at sea level. The archipelago has two. dry seasons — the main one running from June to September, and a shorter dry spell in December and January — which correspond to our tour departure months of June, July, August, September and February. During the dry season, rainfall is low, humidity is more manageable and road and boat access to remote areas is at its best.

Looking to travel outside the typical windows? Our São Tomé and Príncipe tailor-made team can advise on the best time for you.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Alexis

Fabulous, unusual destination, and great people. A private tour of somewhere little-visited, with great service from start to finish and excellent knowledge and advice from Undiscovered Destinations throughout.
