Overview

An introduction to Suriname

Suriname is South America's smallest and least-visited country — a compact, culturally layered nation whose interior is almost entirely rainforest. Sitting between Guyana and French Guiana on the continent's north-eastern shoulder, it is home to Maroon communities descended from escaped enslaved Africans, a UNESCO-listed colonial capital, and river systems that remain the only routes into much of the interior. Few destinations in the Americas feel this genuinely undiscovered.

Our small group Suriname tours travel deep into that interior, exploring the Upper Suriname River by motorised boat to reach Danpaati River Lodge — a remote island lodge in the heart of the rainforest. In Paramaribo, we walk the historic centre, visit Commewijne's former plantation at Peperpot, and explore Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. Combined with neighbouring Guyana and French Guiana on our Hidden Guianas itinerary, a Suriname holiday becomes one of the most distinctive travel experiences in Latin America.

Why visit

What makes Suriname worth the journey

Suriname
A place apart

One of South America's Most Undiscovered Countries

Suriname receives a fraction of the visitors that reach Brazil, Peru or Colombia. Its rainforest interior, accessible only by river, and its small, culturally diverse population make it one of the few places in the Americas where travel still feels genuinely exploratory.

01

A Culture Unlike Anywhere Else in Latin America

Suriname's population is a remarkable mix — Maroon, Amerindian, Hindustani, Javanese, Dutch, Chinese and Creole communities all coexist, each with distinct traditions, food and festivals. Paramaribo reflects this in its markets, temples, mosques and synagogues within a few city blocks.

Authentic Rainforest Immersion

The interior of Suriname is vast, largely roadless and accessible only by river. Staying at Danpaati River Lodge means sleeping in primary rainforest, far from any town, with Caiman on the river at night and Maroon villages nearby.

Three Countries, One Exceptional Journey

Our Suriname trips are part of the Hidden Guianas itinerary — combining Suriname with Guyana and French Guiana. Three different colonial histories, three different ecosystems and three very different capitals make for one of the most layered and rewarding journeys in Latin America.

Highlights

The moments that make Suriname unforgettable

Paramaribo's UNESCO Historic Centre

Suriname's capital is one of South America's most unusual cities — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of elegant Dutch colonial wooden architecture, where the city's oldest mosque and a synagogue stand side by side.

Danpaati River Lodge & the Upper Suriname River

Reached only by a two-to-three-hour motorised boat journey from Atjoni, Danpaati River Lodge sits on an island deep in primary rainforest. Evenings are spent spotlighting for Caiman along the riverbanks; days involve visiting affiliated Maroon villages, learning about traditional crafts and forest life far from the tourist trail.

Maroon Village Life

The Maroon people — descendants of Africans who escaped slavery during the colonial period — maintain traditions rooted in West African culture. Visits to villages along the Upper Suriname River offer genuine insight into woodcarving, spiritual practice and a way of life shaped entirely by the forest and river around it.

Commewijne District & Fort Nieuw Amsterdam

A short river crossing from Paramaribo, the Commewijne district holds the former plantation of Peperpot — now a nature reserve rich with birdlife and monkeys — and Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, a British-built fortress at the confluence of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers, now an open-air museum.

Caiman Spotlighting on the River

The river systems around Danpaati and along the Suriname River are home to Caiman. Night excursions by boat, using spotlights to pick out eyes in the darkness along the riverbanks, are among the most atmospheric wildlife experiences on our Suriname holidays.

Fort Zeelandia & Colonial Paramaribo

Fort Zeelandia anchors Paramaribo's riverside and its history — Dutch, British and indigenous. The adjacent historic district, lined with elaborately carved wooden facades, feels unlike anywhere else in South America, a reminder that Suriname was a Dutch colony until 1975.

Suriname rewards travellers who slow down — the best stories are found off the tour-bus route.

When to go

Picking the right season for your trip

The best times to visit Suriname are the main dry season (February to April) for river travel and rainforest exploration, and the shorter dry season (August to October) for wildlife viewing and canopy walks. The wet seasons (May to July and November to January) bring heavy rain and higher river levels, though the forest becomes exceptionally lush. Temperatures are consistently 26–32°C year-round, with humidity highest during the wet seasons.

Our Suriname tour packages depart in September, November, January, February, March and April — capturing both dry seasons and the quieter shoulder months when the forest is at its most lush.

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Alexis

Fabulous, unusual destination, and great people. A private tour of somewhere little-visited, with great service from start to finish and excellent knowledge and advice from Undiscovered Destinations throughout.

Didn’t find your perfect Suriname trip?

We’ll build one around you.

Suriname lends itself particularly well to tailor-made travel. The country has no real tourist infrastructure outside Paramaribo and the Upper Suriname River corridor, which means private itineraries can be designed around your pace, your interests and your tolerance for remoteness. A private Suriname travel package could extend time in Paramaribo to explore the Waterkant and Commewijne at leisure, spend additional nights at Danpaati River Lodge, or combine a Maroon village stay with deeper birdwatching excursions in the Peperpot Nature Reserve. For those wanting to extend into Guyana or French Guiana, we can build a fully personalised multi-country itinerary with private transport and local guides throughout.
