About this journey

The story behind the route

Guyana is an irresistible combination of fascinating and breathtaking natural beauty, pristine rainforests, immense waterfalls and amazing wildlife all blended with a vibrant indigenous culture, rich heritage and some of the most hospitable and friendly people in the world. On this trip we travel deep into the rainforest to Iwokrama and gain a unique perspective of the forest from its amazing canopy walkway, as well as visiting the Amerindian village of Surama to learn more about the lives of Guyana’s indigenous people. After experiencing nature walks and canoe trips to spot the flora and fauna of the region we travel to Rock View Lodge, where you can hike in the nearby mountains. Finally, we head to Karanambu Lodge and the Guyana tour with its landscape ranging from savannah to wetlands and forest where we take trips on the river, look for birds, monkeys and Giant Anteaters, and experience the overwhelming hospitality that characterises this part of the country. This is a truly unforgettable trip through a stunning land that no serious lover of the wild should miss.

  1. Rainforest Wildlife & Canopy Exploration

The Iwokrama Rainforest forms the spine of this tour, offering encounters with some of South America's most iconic wildlife across several days of guided exploration. From the 35-metre canopy walkway at Atta Lodge to night boat rides searching for caiman and rare dawn walks in the company of local rangers, the forest reveals something extraordinary at every hour of the day.

  2. Rupununi Savannah & Wetland Wildlife

The vast Rupununi region delivers a completely different wildlife experience, from grassland giant anteater searches and nightjar spotting at Karanambu to dusk cruises to see the giant Victoria amazonica water lily in bloom. The river systems are alive with Black Caiman, Giant River Otters, and an astonishing diversity of waterbirds that reward patient and attentive travellers.

  3. Caiman Conservation & Indigenous Communities

Two of the tour's most distinctive experiences are rooted in community and conservation: participating in a live Black Caiman research study at Caiman House, and spending time with the Makushi people in the Amerindian village of Surama. Both offer a depth of engagement that goes well beyond conventional wildlife tourism.

  4. Iconic Landscapes & Natural Landmarks

The tour takes in some of Guyana's most dramatic natural set-pieces, beginning with Kaieteur Falls — the world's highest free-falling single-drop waterfall — and continuing to the summit of Surama Mountain and the panoramic Pakaraima foothills. These landscapes place the extraordinary biodiversity of Guyana in its broader geographical context, from jungle gorge to open savannah horizon.

  5. Birdwatching Throughout

With over 900 bird species recorded in Guyana, birdwatching runs as a thread through every day of this itinerary, from the Botanical Gardens of Georgetown to the airstrip nightjar walks at Karanambu. Highlights include the Crimson Fruit Crow and Cock of the Rock, alongside coastal endemics such as the Hoatzin and five species of eagle in the Iwokrama region.

Voices from the road

What travellers say about us

Reviews from across our small-group programme — Mongolia, Madagascar, the Silk Road and beyond. Independently rated 4.9 Excellent on AITO by 250+ travellers.

An amazing trip! We had the most amazing holiday — over two weeks we had a taste of the cities, the culture, the mountains, a safari, and time at the beach. Our driver/guide made the whole trip very relaxing, and we were welcomed warmly by everyone we met, enjoying fabulous food and drink along the way. Undiscovered Destinations planned a really amazing itinerary for us with great hotels, a fabulous guide/driver, and interesting places to visit — they took great care to ensure we had an excellent holiday. We look forward to booking another holiday with them in the future. Thank you, Mark!

Anna

This adventure was always going to be very full-on, which is how we like our trips. I didn't count on getting bronchitis and ending up in hospital, however. The itinerary was quickly amended to avoid high-altitude destinations as much as possible while still making sure we had a chance to enjoy interesting experiences. While obviously sad to have missed some of the original sites, the revised itinerary was the only sensible option under the circumstances. I was extremely impressed with how Undiscovered Destinations and their local team handled the situation — taking the stress out of it, smoothing the way, rearranging the itinerary and booking new hotels, translating for me with the medical staff, and making sure I always had transport, medicines and anything else I needed. Nothing was too much trouble, and they kept in touch with me, each other, and the insurance company throughout. I can't recommend them enough!

Grete

My wife and I had a wonderful tour with Undiscovered Destinations. We had a different guide at each stop, and all of them were friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable. The local people were welcoming, and we always felt safe and comfortable. The beaches were spectacularly beautiful and empty of people, with warm, clear water, and each stop had its own character — some we loved for their unspoiled scenery, others for their history and the warmth of the welcome. We took the opportunity to snorkel on one of the most pristine reefs we've experienced, swimming with sea turtles and enormous manta rays that came right up to us out of curiosity. A wonderful destination for nature lovers.

Frank

Excellent. Action packed. Our local agent was excellent, and a good choice by Undiscovered Destinations. Because there were only two of us on the holiday, we had different guides at each stop, each one making sure we were handed over safely. All manner of transport was used, and we appreciated the different guiding strategies, the wealth of information given, the high level of English, and the genuine wish to show off their country at its best. Excellent.

Cathy

Far exceeding my expectations, this was one of the best trips I've ever done. A beautiful destination, with interesting history, lively ceremonies, lovely people and — surprisingly, for somewhere that sees so few tourists — absolutely no hassle on the streets. Excellent service from start to finish, with a first-class tour leader.

Lynn

We had a two-week trip with Undiscovered Destinations, flying in for two days first to break up the journey. It was a great trip, because we managed to see so much more than just the capital cities. This was the fourth trip we've taken with Undiscovered Destinations, and each one has been wonderful. Our guides were lovely — very professional and helpful. We rate UD very highly.

Andy

We had a fabulous trip with an excellent local guide, who took great care of us and enthusiastically shared his knowledge of both ancient and recent history, with lots of fascinating personal stories of his own life. We highly recommend this trip — Undiscovered Destinations were great to work with, and we hope to use them again.

Jennie

Everything was great — we got to witness a wonderful variety of wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the hospitality of the people. A fabulous trip from start to finish.

Debbie

Excellent all-round trip. Drivers were conscientious and careful, accommodation was better than expected, and the scenery was stunning throughout.

Alexis

Fabulous, unusual destination, and great people. A private tour of somewhere little-visited, with great service from start to finish and excellent knowledge and advice from Undiscovered Destinations throughout.

Hidden Guianas with Tour Leader – Escorted

The small South American country of Guyana rarely features on most people’s travel plans, but discerning travellers are coming to recognise it as one of the premier wildlife destinations on our planet. Brought into the spotlight by the BBC’s ‘Lost Land of the Jaguar’ series, Guyana offers unique opportunities to spot incredible wildlife such as Tapir, Red-rumped Agouti, Sloth, Caiman and of course the Jaguar itself. Visit the spectacular Kaieteur Falls and gain a unique perspective of the forest from its amazing canopy walkway. In neighbouring Suriname, we explore the unique capital of Paramaribo with its superb colonial architecture and look for Caiman on the banks of the river. We also visit old plantations for an insight into the country’s history, and Maroon villages more reminiscent of Africa than South America. French Guiana, an overseas region of France adjoining Suriname and Brazil, makes up the third of the Guianas, known for the Isles du Salut and the Ariane Space Centre. The three combined makes for a unique tour experience within a little visited corner of Latin America, especially through our small group tours French Guiana that offer an immersive and personalized adventure.
